Leveraging AI to Level Up!

AI is often talked about as either a job-replacing threat or a magic button that does our work for us. But the truth is much more practical.
When used intentionally, it isn't about replacing human effort: it’s about developing a mindset that allows us to bypass friction, overcome roadblocks, and “level up” both as professionals and as people.
Before I learned how to use it to optimize my daily work, I had to completely reframe how I looked at technology.
As a kid, I loved learning. I’d get fiercely invested in a new hobby, such as learning guitar, coding, painting, only to hit a wall of confusion a few months later and give up. Oftentimes, my biggest roadblock wasn't a lack of interest; it was a lack of access to answers when I got stuck...

One place I found that I loved the grind of learning was video games. Some of my favorite games were those with complex mechanics that required months of digging into walkthroughs, online forums, or print guides just to understand some of these intricate systems.
That desire to understand complex systems eventually drove me to study game development in college, and later, to become a software engineer.
However, even with professors and Google at hand, I still felt like I was constantly running into walls where I just couldn’t find the exact answers I needed to get over some of these roadblocks.
Then, AI hit the scene, right about the time I was jumping into software development.
At work, this impact seemed immediate.
I went from spending hours digging through Stack Overflow, parsing vague documentation, or tapping a colleague on their shoulder to having an interactive and knowledgeable rubber duck to bounce ideas off of and ask questions.

Almost overnight, it felt like my impact and learning could grow exponentially. It didn’t always give me the correct answers, but it tried to explain the why, caught edge cases I would have missed, and drastically accelerated my own growth.
Additionally, I leveraged AI outside of the office. I found these same principles and tools could apply to some of my hobbies and goals. Armed with zero prior knowledge of construction (and what I affectionately tell my wife, my “soft hands from office work”), I was able to leverage AI to help me completely finish our basement, navigating both the actual construction process as well as complex local building codes.
I’ve used AI to help me with many other projects now, such as helping me with yard maintenance, self-hosting a family recipe website, or building a custom smart-home dashboard.
What all of these experiences with AI have taught me is that this technology isn't a replacement for curiosity or hard work. It doesn't give us a free pass, and it rarely provides a flawless first draft. Instead, just like the strategy guides from my childhood, the real value comes from how we approach it.
Here are some thoughts about how to use AI as the ultimate tool to “level up” and unblock yourself in any environment:
AI is the Walkthrough, Not a Cheat Code: A lot of people view AI as a cheat code designed to eliminate all effort. This creates a polarized spectrum. On one end, people fear AI will entirely replace them and refuse to touch it. On the other, people assume they can coast by on cruise control while AI does their job. Both mindsets miss the mark. A cheat code skips the level, but a walkthrough teaches you the mechanics. When you treat AI as an interactive manual to guide your actions and unblock you when you are stuck, you are not replacing your own effort. You are just optimizing it!
Embrace the Judgment-Free Sandbox: One of the biggest roadblocks to learning is the fear of looking stupid, or even just the fear of getting started. AI creates a safe sandbox where we can ask the most basic, entry-level questions without friction or embarrassment. When I first started planning our yard maintenance, one of my first questions to AI was simply, "how to plant a tree." It felt a little embarrassing to ask such a basic question, but the AI just walked me through the steps and met me right at my level. It eliminates the social anxiety of being a beginner.
Deconstruct Complex Systems Faster: The reason I loved complex video games was the challenge of figuring out intricate, interwoven systems. Enterprise software consulting is no different. Whether you are building an application or architecting a massive Workfront deployment, you are constantly forced to parse complex documentation, vague requirements, and technical constraints. AI acts as a system translator. You can feed it a dense piece of documentation or an error log and ask it to break down the core logic in seconds. By letting AI handle the heavy lifting of parsing information, you can focus your energy on high-level strategy and solution architecture.

Master the Mechanics: If you just copy a solution from a guide without understanding it, you haven't actually learned how to play the game. You won't be able to beat the next level on your own. The same rule applies to AI. Because AI can hallucinate or give outdated answers, you can never just blindly copy and paste its output. The true leveling up happens when you ask the AI to explain its logic or provide documentation, and then you analyze it to see if it holds up. By training yourself to spot when the AI is wrong, you are forced to learn the actual mechanics of the problem. That critical review is where real expertise is built. It’s not uncommon to not know the answer to a question that a client may have, but it’s important to give accurate answers, so even when leveraging AI, I always check it against either documentation or real world testing.
Using AI intentionally has been hugely impactful in my life. By learning how to leverage it properly, I have been able to dig deeper, learn faster, and tackle projects I used to think were out of reach. When you embrace this mindset in both your professional and personal pursuits, you stop getting blocked by the hard stuff. You hone your skills, level up, and find yourself ready for whatever challenge comes next.
